Thank you for your interest in North Spring Behavioral Healthcare! We’d like to share the treatment philosophy that drives our work so that you can better understand how our programs can serve the needs of the children and adolescents we work with.
We believe that all children want to do well. There is a complex set of factors — neurological, psychological and environmental — that can lead to a low sense of self-efficacy in children. These children, whose natural resiliency has been overwhelmed by repeated frustrations, become increasingly symptomatic and therefore require ever-increasing levels of intervention. We believe that these young people need to be understood conceptually, in the light of good, empirically-based assessment tools and experienced clinical judgment. Because of this, we feel strongly that the treatment plan is not a document “for the file,” but an active document that drives treatment.
We believe that it is our responsibility to understand each individual child and adolescent’s challenges, and to create a program that is designed to remove the obstacles that have continually frustrated them. Children do not respond well to across-the-board, cookie-cutter behavior modification systems. At best they might be successful in an institution, where all of the variables can be controlled, but won’t last in the “real world.” At worst, they just frustrate the child more.
With a successful, individualized plan, the child will develop a sense of competence and realize that there are possibilities that they did not previously see. The frustrations that had driven them to despair can then be revisited with a new sense of hope — and it is this hope, in conjunction with the efforts of an experienced clinical team, that will allow each young person to develop their own creative means by which to overcome the problem.
We believe that children should not be in residential treatment centers for longer than they need to be. Each individual’s treatment should be as short as possible, dictated by the child’s individual needs, the needs of the referring locality and the needs of the parent.
These are challenging principles to live with. But for us, it’s a matter of sound, ethical treatment. North Spring Behavioral Healthcare is fortunate to have an extremely seasoned clinical staff, second to none in Virginia, and we have dedicated ourselves to striving to live these principles each day. We use every tool at our disposal — from traditional talk-therapy to art therapy and animal assisted therapy — to help children and adolescents find a sense of hope and potential.
We look forward to working with you!
